Stella and Celes: a thematic continuity in the Final Fantasy series In the February 8, 2008 issue of Dengeki PlayStation , Final Fantasy Versus XIII offered one of its earliest glimpses of its heroine, Stella. Her description is particularly striking: “Rejecting her sadness and driven by an unshakable will, the heroine stands before the protagonist to block his path. What will be the outcome of this confrontation…?” Just below this presentation, the magazine expands into a broader reflection on the Final Fantasy series, highlighting a rarely explored motif: heroines who stand in opposition to the protagonist. Umbra

Umbra アンブラ Roberto Ferrari, Nomura’s right-hand man and the character designer behind many of FFXV’s secondary characters, revealed that several shinobi-inspired characters were originally planned for FFXV before being removed from the story, apparently similar to the Kingsglaive soldiers, but with a much more traditional Japanese aesthetic. Ferrari himself also stated that Umbra was supposed to have a human form and be one of those shinobi. What makes this even more interesting is that “umbra” literally means “shadow” in Latin, which could very well have been a subtle reference to Shadow from FFVI, a character originally designed by Tetsuya Nomura himself, who also has a dog. Prompto Argentum

  Prompto Argentum プロンプト・アージェンタム Prompto Argentum is a cheerful young man who carries a gun. His overly energetic personality makes him less of a mood-maker and sometimes more of a troublemaker. Unlike Noctis and the others, Prompto does not come from a special or noble lineage. He became friends with them during their school days and is known as a playful, lighthearted companion who loves joking around and flirting with girls. However, beneath his carefree attitude, Prompto secretly feels insecure about the difference in social status between himself and his friends, and he is conscious of not having grown up with them as a childhood companion. Because of this, he sincerely wishes to be useful to the group and has a genuinely kind and earnest side hidden beneath his joking personality.

Ignis Scientia

  Ignis Scientia イグニス・スキエンティア Formerly: Ignis Stupeo Scientia イグニス・ストゥーペオ・スキエンティア Ignis Scientia is a calm and composed young man. Like Gladiolus, Ignis has known Noctis since childhood. He is consistently level-headed, highly intelligent, quick-thinking, and possesses a serious, disciplined personality. From an early age, he received an elite education in preparation for serving Noctis as his future strategist and advisor. As one of Noctis’s closest confidants, Ignis supports and compensates for his awkwardness and inexperience, while also offering guidance and advice when needed. He is both a loyal aide and a trusted friend who deeply understands him.

Gladiolus Amicitia

  Gladiolus Amicitia グラディオラス・アミシティア Gladiolus Amicitia is the most physically imposing of the four main companions and is often seen as the “older brother” figure of the group. He is the heir of the Amicitia family, a lineage that has traditionally served the royal family as the “Shield” for generations. His muscular build stands out, as do the bird-of-prey-like tattoos visible on his arm and chest. Gladiolus grew up alongside Noctis, and their bond transcends social class or formal hierarchy. They were raised almost like brothers rather than as noble and retainer. The Amicitia family and the royal family have maintained close, family-like ties for generations, making their relationship feel more like a trusted alliance between equals than a strict master–vassal structure.

Stella Nox Fleuret

  Stella Nox Fleuret ステラ・ノックス・フルーレ Stella Nox Fleuret is the heroine of the story and a noble princess of the prestigious Fleuret family from the Kingdom of Tenebrae, a neighboring nation to the Kingdom of Lucis where Noctis Lucis Caelum lives. Her name carries the meanings of “star,” “darkness,” and “sword.” Raised with refinement and elegance, Stella speaks politely to everyone regardless of the situation or social status. Although graceful and gentle in appearance, she also possesses a strong and courageous side. She wields a slender, ornamented sword. Stella first meets Noctis during a formal celebration and invites him to visit her homeland before they part ways. She also appears to harbor romantic feelings toward him, and is portrayed as being deeply connected to Noctis. The central bond between them is that both survived near-death experiences and gained the ability to perceive the mysterious “light” connected to the realm of the dead.

Noctis Lucis Caelum

Noctis Lucis Caelum ノクティス・ルシス・ チェラム Noctis Lucis Caelum, nicknamed Noct, is the main protagonist of the story and the heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Lucis, the last nation in the world to possess a Crystal. His name derives from Latin and carries the meanings of “night,” “light,” and “sky.” Despite being royalty, Noctis does not care much about noble status or aristocratic traditions and dislikes the rigid lifestyle of the royal family. Although he often appears calm, cool, and confident, this attitude is largely a façade used to hide his natural shyness and awkwardness around others. Beneath his composed exterior lies a young man determined to become strong enough to protect the people close to him and his kingdom.
