Noctis Lucis Caelum, nicknamed Noct, is the main protagonist of the story and the heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Lucis, the last nation in the world to possess a Crystal. His name derives from Latin and carries the meanings of “night,” “light,” and “sky.” Despite being royalty, Noctis does not care much about noble status or aristocratic traditions and dislikes the rigid lifestyle of the royal family.


Although he often appears calm, cool, and confident, this attitude is largely a façade used to hide his natural shyness and awkwardness around others. Beneath his composed exterior lies a young man determined to become strong enough to protect the people close to him and his kingdom. Because of this desire to appear strong, he can sometimes overestimate his own abilities or react impulsively.


Noctis possesses extraordinary combat powers, including the ability to wield countless weapons freely and use a form of teleportation. When his hidden power awakens, his eyes glow red. As a child, he survived an accident and was touched by a mysterious “light” descending from the sky, which left him with the supernatural ability to sense or foresee people’s deaths.


The Kingdom of Lucis, guardian of the world’s final Crystal, has long been locked in a Cold War with the militaristic empire of Niflheim. Although the two nations attempt to establish peace through a treaty, Niflheim betrays Lucis and launches a massive invasion. Noctis and those around him are suddenly thrown into a devastating war centered around the last Crystal.


The story follows Noctis and several young companions, including Gladiolus Amicitia, heir to the Amicitia family that has served the Lucis royal line for generations, and Prompto, one of Noctis’s close friends since their student days. The mysterious Stella of the Fleuret family from the Kingdom of Tenebrae also plays an important role in the unfolding conflict.


Noctis was created by Tetsuya Nomura as an unconventional Final Fantasy protagonist: a young man with a strong, distinctive personality who masks his vulnerability with a tough exterior in order to protect his kingdom and loved ones.

  Origin and Design of Noctis Lucis Caelum The origin of Noctis Lucis Caelum’s design is rooted in the early development phase of the Fabula Nova Crystallis project, at a time when Tetsuya Nomura was still working on Kingdom Hearts II. According to various development interviews and project retrospectives, Nomura reportedly conceived an early idea for a male protagonist as early as the mid-2000s, with a more modern and realistic tone compared to the usual standards of the Final Fantasy series. This initial conceptual sketch is said to have predated his full reading of the Final Fantasy XIII planning document and was more closely aligned with his personal vision of a “contemporary” protagonist rather than a clearly defined project direction at that stage. 𝙉𝙤𝙢𝙪𝙧𝙖: The design that had been drawn within the development team beforehand was a simple, tight-fitting outfit, but for the reasons I mentioned earlier, I changed the design significantly. Actually, before I heard the details from the planning team, I had assumed the protagonist was male and had been drawing with that in mind. When I later learned the character was female, I redrew the design  but I liked the male design I had created at first, so I decided to use it as the protagonist ( Noct ) of 𝗙𝗙 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘂𝘀 𝗫𝗜𝗜𝗜.
