Final Fantasy Versus XIII

On May 8, 2006, during E3 2006, Square Enix announced an ambitious project: Fabula Nova Crystallis.

Among these titles, one in particular left a lasting impression…

Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

A mysterious, dark work, driven by a unique vision, and by characters who became legendary without ever having had the chance to fully tell their story:

Noctis Lucis Caelum, his companions… and Stella Nox Fleuret.

Twenty years later, time has passed.

Projects were born, evolved… some disappeared, others were transformed.

Among them, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which eventually became a mainline entry under the name Final Fantasy XV.

And yet, despite everything, the anticipation remains.

An almost unreal kind of anticipation.

Because even today, many of us still hope that one day we will be able to discover the true story of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, with its original characters, music, and locations.

That of Noctis and Stella, as it was originally envisioned by Tetsuya Nomura and Kazushige Nojima.

We hope they can finally deliver this long-awaited story in its original form, through a remake of Final Fantasy XV.

To see that world. To feel that atmosphere. To understand those characters.

It is no longer just a game.

It has become a vision. A memory. A promise.

Games such as Reynatis and Lost Soul Aside are directly inspired by Final Fantasy Versus XIII, to the point that they even feature Yoko Shimomura for the music in both, Kazushige Nojima as scenario writer for Reynatis, and a partnership with the same clothing brand, Roen, for Lost Soul Aside.

Twenty years later…

The anticipation continues.

In the hope that one day, Tetsuya Nomura and Kazushige Nojima will be able to offer us a remake of Final Fantasy XV, and finally allow us to discover and experience the true story of Noctis and Stella.

In today’s landscape, more recent works show just how much the legacy of Final Fantasy Versus XIII / Final Fantasy XV continues to live on, even outside Square Enix.

Games such as Reynatis and Lost Soul Aside are striking examples of this. One can find a direct influence of that original vision in them, whether in their atmosphere, their cinematic presentation, or their artistic direction.

In Reynatis, this legacy is clearly felt: the music is entrusted to Yoko Shimomura, the scenario to Kazushige Nojima, and the concept art to Yusuke Naora, three figures deeply connected to the DNA of Final Fantasy Versus XIII / Final Fantasy XV. In addition, Takumi Isobe, the director and producer of Reynatis and a great admirer of Tetsuya Nomura, has played all of his games. He even had the opportunity to meet him, collaborate with him on Reynatis, and interview him.

For its part, Lost Soul Aside also shares this spiritual lineage, particularly through its aesthetic and its partnership with the Roen brand, already associated with the visual identity of that vision, as well as through a main theme composed by Yoko Shimomura.

These connections are not insignificant. They show that, despite the passing years and numerous transformations, the original vision of this project continues to inspire creators and to extend into other works, like a still-living imprint within the industry, 20 years after its announcement.
